Yes, this works.

You have to uninstall all JoomGallery 3 modules and plugins but keep the component. Then do the upgrade to Joomla 4.

After upgrade, the JoomGallery views in frontend and backend will throw php errors and will not work anymore. But data is perserved.

In the meantime you could use Joomla 4 compatible image modules or plugins to show all images of a folder. Since JoomGallery is sorting the images in folders according to the category structure you can show this way gallery views with images of a specific category.

If you do that just make sure the plugin or module does not create any additional files and folders to create the gallery views. Otherwise you will mess up the file and folder structure and you will have problems later on with your JoomGallery component!

First alpha version ready for testing.

It's probably too early to ask about this, since there are still trials of a JoomGallery (JG) test version for Joomla 4 ... But as we know, Joomla 5 is already announced (called "just a J4 upgrade", not a migration as was usually with earlier version changes). So what are the plans of the JG developers to adapt this extension to J5? I mainly mean the expected date, because I have no doubt that it will happen someday. Is this work already underway for the announced next stable JG version?

There are just some minor fixes to be done on JG4 to make it Joomla 5 compatible. I expect JG4 to run under Joomla 5 when the first release.

I'm on Joomla 3 still now and it's very urgent to update to joomla 5. I'm waiting for joomgallery to be compatible so to proceed to update.

Some friends tell me to switch to Ignite Gallery but I don't want to leave Joomgallery because I prefer it by using it all these years and also I prefer not to make conversions.

Can you let us know when will it be ready for full update to Joomla 4/5 with all the categories / images we have now on Joomla 3?

First of all, its not urgent to update. Joomla 3 still gets security updates within the ELTS program: https://elts.joomla.org

Our internal development timeline forsees to release the next alpha version in the next month. In August we plan to leave the alpha phase and proceed to the beta phase.

Depending on the amount of bugs found by our testers the stable release of JoomGallery 4 will be in Q4 this year.

This dates are mentioned without obligation. Since we are a very small team of volunteers working on the project, we can not guarantee releasing dates (sadly).

We could realy need some further help...

I am not a programmer, but I would like to help with Alpha & Beta testing in the future.

I have a development server in my house, and I have Joomla 3 & 4 already installed.

On Joomla 3, I installed JoomGallery 3.6.2 so I am learning as we go.

I also have an account with RackNerd Web Hosting for development.

We are very interested in JoomGallery.

I am helping a Photo club to develop a photo contest using JoomGallery.

We want to use JoomGallery 4 and 5 in the near future.

It is planned as follows: You have a J4/J5 test page. You install the current JG 4 Alpha 3 version on it and generally test the current options on your system.
The JG 4 Alpha 3 version also has a migration manager with which you can migrate/transfer your JG3 categories and images to the new JG 4 alpha 3 for testing.
An update from a JG 3 to JG 4 alpha 3 is currently not advisable.

The development team responded elsewhere as follows:
"We are currently working daily towards the first beta version. At the moment, the router for the SEF URLs is still a big missing piece. This must be implemented before we can enter the beta phase
The development team is just very limited in size and it therefore takes longer than expected. Any help is very appreciated."

Note from me: the JG 4 will then work for Joomla 5 and J6...

I will wait then until is ready. In your current progress ,can you estimated how long it will take you to make it? Even an average / quick calculation , Just to know roughly when it will be ready so I can prepare the update to Joomla 4 and do some things on my site that I have in mind.

My personal goal is to release the first stable version at the beginning of the year (2025).

However, we cannot promise this, as it depends on the availability of our volunteers. You are very welcome to participate in the development and testing to speed up the process.

Then you get access to our monthly online meeting and to the updated ToDo list of the development team. Any help is very welcome!

A long wait has come to an end.
The first stable version of JoomGallery 4 has been released! This new version is fully compatible with Joomla! 4.x and 5.x.

I read that Voting system doesn't exist yet in Joomagallery 4. If I update to Joomla 4/5 with Joomgallery 4, will my existing votes disappear? Or in a later update of Joomgallery will be shown then again?

Also the same question for the existing comments in my Joomgallery 3, will be there if I update to Joomgalley 4 or they also not exist yet?
