JoomGallery 4 - Poll

    • Offizieller Beitrag

The development of the key features of the JoomGallery for Joomla 4+ are almost finished. Soon we will be able to provide you with an alpha version for testing.

We would like to take this opportunity to obtain the feedback of the users of our beloved JoomGallery. With the help of this poll we want to schedule the further development and make sure that important features and wishes are considered in the best way possible.

The survey is divided into five parts:

    • What do you need in the first version
We would like to find out which features are urgently needed and need to be available already at the beginning (in the first stable release), so you can use the gallery. The more features we want in the first version, the longer it will take until it can be released.
    • Which functions from JG3 do you still need?
The aim is to have as many functions of the JG3 available in the JG4 sooner or later. Please choose which functions you don't want to miss in the long run. Frequently selected functions will be delivered first, rarely selected functions will be delivered later or not even at all.
    • New functionalities
Are there functions that are not part of the JG3 but would be important for your application?
    • Costs of JoomGallery
We realize that JoomGallery users contribute only very little or nothing to the further existence of the project / component. Therefore, we are strongly considering making JG4 a paid component. What would you be willing to pay?
    • How do you use the JoomGallery
What kind of gallery do you run on your website and how many images do you manage with it.

Each registered user of this forum can answer each question only once.

We realize that JoomGallery users contribute very little to nothing to the continued existence of the project / components. Therefore, we are strongly considering making the JG4 chargeable. What would you be willing to pay?

The JoomGallery is actually an open source / volunteer project. That means: users develop for other users. This component can still only be offered for free if you actively participate much more in the JoomGallery!

The JoomGallery shows its strengths especially in large image collections. We are therefore interested in the size of the image collection of your JoomGallery with the most images.

    Hat das Thema freigeschaltet.
  • Many thanks for your great work!

With the End of Life of Joomla 3 approaching, all of my Joomla sites are now on Joomla 4, except the one with a JoomGallery 3 gallery. For the purposes of security and support, I will suggest the main priority be getting compatible / migrated to Joomla 4, so that sites can be safe and supported. (PHP 8 support is also critical for this, as PHP7 is ending.)

  • Finish this work, Joomla 5 is coming now... thanks for all

If you had informed yourself, you would know that the JG 4 will then also run with the J5...

  • I am currently working on step 4 of the migration process. Currently I foresee the following update procedure:
    1. Initial state (Joomla 3.10.x , JoomGallery 3.6.x

    2. Update Joomla (Joomla 4.x , JoomGallery 3.6.x)

    3. Update JoomGallery (Joomla 4.x , JoomGallery 4.x)

    4. Data migration using Jg3ToJg4 migration script

During step 3 the JoomGallery installation script will rename the old JG3 database tables and deactivate all old JoomGallery extensions. Then it installs JoomGallery 4 like a fresh installation.

After step 3 you will have an updated JoomGallery looking and behaving like a newly, freshly installed JoomGallery 4. The data from the JoomGallery 3 will still be there in the background but just not visible in the component, since they are in parallel database tables.

Step 4 will then migrate the old data into JoomGallery 4.

A migration into another parallel Joomla 4 application will also be possible. Then you skip step 1-3 and start directly with step 4 (the migration script).
