it's hard to say without a link to the website. 
I have not had any problems with the speed of the detail view so far.
It is possible that some other extensions are loaded on your website, but you would have to analyse this directly on your website.

Do you have the the Minis enabled in your detail view? If yes, how big is your number of images in the category?

Can these pages be cached using .htaccess? Or use cloudflare website that can improve speed?
I already included a mod_expires.c module in the .htaccess but it did not help a lot. Even with a fast connection the loading of the category needs about 8 seconds.

Tom, your issue is very simple - in category view you are displaying images which are not resized properly for category view. Some images are in very large resolution of up to 3000px on the longer side and a total file size of some files around 1.5MB. Total page load is 29MB.
You need to go to your Joomla -> Joomgallery -> Configuration manager -> General settings -> Image Processing
There set the proper size restrictions for Thumbnails - seems 380px is your desired thumbnail size and set quality to 85 which should be sufficient.
This will fix it for further image uploads, but you will need to recreate the image thumbnails and resize them to 380px on the wider side.
Thank you very much for your response. I checked my settings and they where correct. The thumbs have been loaded at 300 x 300 px. I have found them on the server in the catergory-thumbs folder and the sizes are between 60 and 140 kb. So when you say there is a page load of 29MB in this case the gallery would not load the thumbs of this folder ? I thought I might optimize the thumbs manually but now I don`t know where where the problem could be.
Ahh and the originals on the JoomGallery folder are between 200 and 750 kb.
Not entirely true. Page inspector shows several very large files. Check those and fix their sizes for better performance. See screenshot

That`s right. These are special images for to zoom in a picture. But they are located on a detail - page, when you click on the "I" symbol. https://www.christahillekamp.c…lage-mixed-media-270.html
I thought that these pages are not loaded together with the category page ?
Well that Javascript is preloading all the large images which you have in the gallery on page load and not when you click on the zoom button.
